Architectural Shingle
Also called dimensional or laminate shingles — thicker, multi-layered asphalt shingles that create depth and shadow lines. Standard on modern Houston-area residential roofs.
3-Tab Shingle
The older, flat single-layer asphalt shingle. Rarely installed on new estate homes today because architectural shingles carry longer warranties and better wind ratings.
Designer Shingle
Premium multi-dimensional shingle (like GAF Camelot or Grand Sequoia) that mimics slate or shake at a fraction of the weight and cost. Common in Memorial and River Oaks.
Standing-Seam Metal
Interlocking metal panels with raised vertical seams — the highest-performing metal roof system, rated 50+ years, common on modern estate homes and accents.
Slate
Natural stone roofing tile — the longest-lasting residential material (75-100+ years). Extremely heavy; requires reinforced framing.
TPO
Thermoplastic Polyolefin — a bright-white single-ply commercial membrane that reflects heat. iSmart's most common commercial re-roof choice for multifamily and retail.
PVC (Roofing)
Polyvinyl Chloride single-ply commercial membrane. Similar to TPO but more chemical-resistant, often used on restaurants.
Modified Bitumen
Asphalt-based commercial roofing installed in rolls. Common on older Houston flat roofs; typically replaced with TPO during re-roofs.
Underlayment
The waterproof layer installed between the roof deck and the shingles. Modern synthetic underlayment outperforms traditional 15/30 lb felt.
Decking (Sheathing)
The plywood or OSB surface nailed to the trusses that shingles are installed over. Damaged decking must be replaced during a re-roof.
Ridge
The peak where two roof planes meet at the top. Covered by ridge cap shingles and often ventilated.
Valley
Where two roof planes meet in a downward V — a high-water-flow area that requires special flashing.
Flashing
Sheet-metal pieces installed around chimneys, walls, vents, and valleys to prevent water intrusion. Failed flashing is the #1 source of Houston roof leaks.
Fascia
The vertical board that runs along the roof's edge behind the gutter. Often replaced with the gutters during a re-roof.
Soffit
The horizontal panel under the roof overhang. Vented soffit brings fresh air into the attic to help balance ridge ventilation.
Gable
The triangular wall section formed where two roof planes meet at the end of a home.
Hip Roof
A roof where all sides slope downward toward the walls — no vertical gable ends. More wind-resistant than gable-style roofs, common in Texas coastal design.
Pitch (Slope)
The steepness of a roof, expressed as inches of rise per 12 inches of run (e.g., 6/12). Steeper pitches last longer because water sheds faster.
Square (Roofing)
A unit of measurement — 100 square feet of roof surface. A typical Houston home is 25-45 squares.
Tear-off vs. Overlay
Tear-off = removing existing shingles down to the deck before installing new. Overlay = installing new shingles on top of old. iSmart only installs tear-off — overlays void manufacturer warranties.
Full Re-Roof
Tear-off of the existing roof plus a complete new installation — new underlayment, flashing, shingles, and ventilation. Backed by a full manufacturer system warranty.
Ice & Water Shield
A self-sealing waterproof membrane installed at eaves, valleys, and penetrations. Rare in Houston (no ice) but valuable for hurricane-driven wind uplift.
Drip Edge
L-shaped flashing installed along the edge of the roof to direct water into the gutter and away from the fascia. Required by IRC code.
Starter Strip
The first course of shingles installed at the eaves — designed to seal and lock the first row of visible shingles against wind uplift.
Ridge Vent
Continuous vent installed at the ridge to exhaust hot attic air. Paired with soffit intake for balanced ventilation.
Attic Ventilation
The airflow system (intake at soffits, exhaust at ridge) that keeps attic temperatures balanced. Poor ventilation shortens shingle life and drives up A/C bills in Houston summers.
Wind Rating
Manufacturer-tested resistance to wind uplift, measured in mph. Modern architectural shingles are rated 110-130 mph — important for Houston hurricane exposure.
Impact Rating (Class 3 / Class 4)
UL 2218 hail-impact classification. Class 4 is the highest — often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts across Texas.
Manufacturer Warranty
The material warranty from the shingle maker (e.g., GAF Golden Pledge, Owens Corning Platinum). Requires a certified installer — iSmart is both.
Workmanship Warranty
The installer's guarantee on installation. iSmart's workmanship warranty runs alongside the manufacturer warranty for full coverage.
GAF Master Elite
GAF's top installer certification — held by fewer than 2% of roofing contractors nationally. iSmart is Master Elite certified.
Owens Corning Preferred
Owens Corning's certified-installer program that unlocks their extended System Protection warranty. iSmart is a Preferred Contractor.
Insurance Claim (Roof)
A homeowner claim filed after storm or hail damage. Insurance typically covers replacement minus deductible when damage meets adjuster criteria.
ACV vs RCV
Actual Cash Value = depreciated payout. Replacement Cost Value = full replacement cost after depreciation is recovered. RCV policies pay significantly more on claims.
Public Adjuster
A licensed advocate who negotiates insurance claims on behalf of the homeowner. iSmart works directly with adjusters and does not require one for most claims.
Deductible
The out-of-pocket amount the homeowner pays before insurance covers the rest. Typical Houston roof deductibles are 1-2% of home value.
Roofing Permit
Municipal permit required for a full re-roof. iSmart pulls permits under our licensed contractor number in every jurisdiction we serve.
ARB / ARC
Architectural Review Board / Committee — the HOA body that approves exterior changes. iSmart submits color, material, and product docs on your behalf.
Cool Roof
A high-reflectance roof system (light color, reflective granules) that reduces heat gain. Especially valuable in Houston's climate.
